A survery was conducted in Kyotango City into people’s consciousness about lifestyle, actual working conditions, and gender equality. Based on the survey a document detailing attitudes to gender equality was created to enable reflection on plans and policies.

Violence against women, such as violence by husbands or partners (domestic violence DV) is clearly against women’s rights. It is not only a problem within a marriage or couple’s relationship, but must also be considered as a problem for society.
Does anything spring to mind?
Not only physical violence such as punching or kicking - any actions which injure a woman mentally or physically are domestic violence.
◎Psychological Violence
・Using profane language, ignoring someone, breaking or throwing away their important possessions
・Threatening ”We’re finished”, “Get out”, “Die” etc, breaking walls and household items, brandishing knives.
・Speaking to someone as a servant; “Who feeds you?”etc
・Blaming violence on the woman; “Because my wife does things that make me angry”,“I only pushed her a bit, like happens in any household”.
◎Economic Violence
Not allowing a woman to work, not handing over money to pay bills etc, close checking of what is spent.
◎Sexual Violence
Imposing unwanted sexual acts, not co-operating with contraceptive methods, forcing a woman to have an abortion.
◎Violence involving Children
Criticising or insulting a woman in front of the children - “You’re stupid”, “You’re not qualified to be a mother”.
◎Social Violence
Limiting contact with a woman’s parents, siblings, friends. Checking calls, letters or mails.
Changing our Attitudes is Essential
The root of men’s violence against women is the idea that men are superior and women should do as men say. It is important for each one of us to work towards equality and not maintain ideas based on gender power inequality.
If we learn and teach the idea that violence is unacceptable we can stop violence.
No violence is ever acceptable.

About women’s advice services
We offer assistance to women experiencing a range of problems and worries.
Until now the service was offered on the third Friday of each month however due to the large number of women using the service, from April 2006 the service will be offered twice a month.
Issues include domestic problems (husband and wife, parents and children; marriage, divorce, financial support, child rearing, violence from a husband or partner) etc), problems in the workplace (sexual harassment), inter-personal relations (among friends or neighbours). If you are affected by any of these or other problems please feel free to use the women’s advisory service.
