■What is asbestos?
Asbestos is a naturally occurring mineral fibre. Resistant to heat, friction, acid and alkali, asbestos is known for its strength and stability. For this reason asbestos is used in many manufactured products. However, because of its strength and resistance to mutation, when inhaled it damages lung tissue and hidden for a 15-40 year period can cause diseases such as lung cancer and mesothelioma. Since the fibres are so fine as to be invisible to the naked eye it is possible to inhale them without knowing.
■About household goods containing asbestos
A government investigation showed that in electric applicances etc used in most households, asbestos is used in certain parts. In normal use there is said to be no risk of asbestos fibres being released. In the case of disposal of such applicances please follow the guidelines below and do not dismantle or break up the appliance.
■Appliances which may contain asbestos

(※This is not an exhaustive list)
◎Ways to identify such items

To dispose of appliances which contain asbestos, without breaking or dismantling the item, wrap in two layers of bags, write in large letters 「アスベスト」and take directly to a Rubbish Disposal Area.
